Summer is here and we’re swigging iced coffees like there’s no tomorrow, which might be wonderful for our tastebuds but is having a serious effect on our bank balances (seriously, can everything STOP BEING SO EXPENSIVE now).
A good way to save money – not to mention plastic – from all those takeaway drinks is by making your iced coffees at home, and there are plenty of recipes you can play with, ranging from the classic iced latte to more adventurous frappe-style blends. There are even ways to make iced coffee if you don’t have a coffee machine in your kitchen.
Dave Cutler, head of training at Lavazza, has shared some easy-to-make-at-home iced coffee recipes with us, so you can get your caffeine hit and cool down all at once.
SIMPLE ICED LATTE RECIPE
The most popular iced drink in most coffee shops also happen to be one of the easiest to make at home.
Ingredients
Coffee – you can use either espresso made in a coffee machine, or a strong filtered coffee
Milk – you can use any milk for this recipe and you do not need to use ‘barista edition’ plant-based milk as you are not steaming the drink)
Ice
Method
To create, add ice to your glass and pour milk (regular or plant-based) until the glass is three-quarters full. Top up glass with freshly made coffee. This can be either espresso made from your coffee machine or strong filtered coffee. Add flavoured syrups as desired and stir.
COLD BREW RECIPE
For those looking for a drink that packs a punch, the Cold Brew will keep you cool and energised all day long.
Ingredients
Ground coffee – suitable for use in a cafetiere
Equipment
A cafetiere
Method
To create a cold strong brew, add five parts water to one part coffee to the cafetiere. Leave to brew overnight to pull out coffee flavours. Serve straight from cafetiere and add ice.
Top tip
Make coffee ice cubes by freezing the cold brew, made using instructions above, into ice cube moulds in the freezer. When you’re ready to drink, add one ice cube to a glass and pour water over it. The ice cube will gradually dissolve into water, adding more and more coffee flavour as you enjoy the brew.
