An iced coffee is the ultimate summer beverage.

Starbucks and Costa both do brilliant offerings – but sometimes it can get a little expensive splashing out on daily drinks.

The good news is that it’s really simple to make iced coffee at home – you can use instant coffee, pods or ground beans.

So if you’re looking to keep costs down – or if you simply don’t want to leave the house – you can recreate them for yourself. All you need is a few simple ingredients.

It’s worth pointing out that to give your coffee a bit more sweetness, there are lots of syrups that can be added to the below recipes – to suit personal taste.

How to make an iced coffee at home:

Instant iced coffee recipe – from The Ice Co.

Ingredients:

  • Handful of ice
  • 1 tsp instant coffee
  • ½ tsp sugar
  • Hot water
  • Milk (to top up)

Method:

  1. Add the coffee and sugar to a jug. Pour in hot water and stir.
  2. In a glass add the ice and pour in the milk. Shake the milk beforehand if you want it to be frothy.
  3. Pour in the hot coffee, stir and enjoy.

Iced flat white recipe – from Charli Robey, a barista at Hoxton Bakehouse

Ingredients:

  • Ice cubes
  • Milk
  • Hot water
  • Instant coffee

Method:

  1. Put your glass in the freezer for a few minutes (5-10 roughly) to get it nice and cold.
  2. Then, add 4 ice cubes to the glass and pour over your desired milk.
  3. While you’re doing that, get your instant coffee in a small cup and add hot water to make a pourable, concentrated paste. For an iced flat white, this is about 2 and a half teaspoons of coffee.
  4. Finally, pour your coffee concentrate over the milk and ice.

Additional iced coffee tips from Charli Robey:

  • ‘If you prefer an iced latte, use a bigger glass and add more milk.
  • ‘You can use any instant coffee from the shops – don’t worry if it’s really chunky or fine, or says it’s espresso.
  • ‘If you want sugar in your coffee, make sure to add it with your hot water – sugar doesn’t dissolve in cold drinks.
  • ‘Get fancy and whisk up your milk – even cold milk will froth a bit and add some texture (use a milk frother or elbow grease and a whisk).
  • ‘If you don’t drink milk and want just a black iced coffee – just swap the milk for cold water
  • ‘To get really fancy, switch the milk for a scoop of ice cream and you’ve got yourself an affogato – perfect for summer.’
