America’s fast-food industry might be due for an upgrade. Steele Smiley, the founder of Crisp & Green, is leading the charge. Serial restaurant impresario Steele Smiley has often been compared to a modern-day Ray Kroc—the longtime CEO of McDonald’s who pioneered modern fast-food retailing. ‘Horrifying’: Giant tortoise filmed hunting down and eating baby bird

This female tortoise hunted down and ate a seabird chick. Video screenshot by Amanda Kooser/CNET Giant tortoises have a reputation as slow-moving vegetarians that snack on grasses and fruits. Video captured by researchers is changing the way we think about these heavy land animals. Still slow? Pretty much. Vegetarian? Not always.  The video comes from Fregate Island in the Indian Ocean. The island in the Seychelles is privately owned and hosts ecotourists who come for the beaches and to view the birds and wildlife, including a population of over 3,000 free-roaming giant tortoises. Some of those tortoises are into hunting

What doctors wish patients knew about healthy eating

What you eat plays a leading role in your health and well-being. Two AMA members took time to discuss what they wish patients knew about healthy eating. They are: Stephen Devries, MD, a preventive cardiologist and executive director of the nonprofit Gaples Institute in Chicago. Ethan Lazarus, MD, a family physician

How Long Does It Really Take to Make Healthy Eating and Exercise a Habit?

(Getty Images) While it’s no surprise that humans are creatures of habit, research shows that as much as 45% of people’s behaviors happen on repeat each and every day, and often in the same location and around the same time. Your morning coffee? That’s a habit. Binge-watching Netflix to fall asleep each night? That’s a habit too. For some people, waking up at 5:30 every morning to work out for an hour is a habit. But the beauty of habits (provided they’re healthy habits) isn’t just that you perform them regularly, it’s that you perform them automatically and without thought.
