The Best And Worst Vegetarian Meat Substitutes For The Environment

In an effort to protect the environment, many of us have started whipping up a tofu stir fry on the regular and chowing down on the popular Impossible Burger in place of a traditional beef hamburger patty. You’re on the right track if you’re doing this. Environmental experts agree that eating any type of meat substitute is, without a doubt, better for the environment than meat. “The single biggest step that will significantly reduce our environmental impact of the food we eat and grow is to ensure that we consume more plant-based proteins within our diets,” Mark Driscoll, a sustainability

One in three meat-eaters who follow Meat Free Monday (MFM) for five years and beyond turn vegetarian, a new study claims. Research by the Brighton and Sussex Medical School (BSMS) and MFM has found that more than 30 per cent of those who engaged with the programme for five years or more stopped eating meat, with 20 per cent of those who engaged for three to five-years. The MFM campaign, which was founded by Paul McCartney and his daughters Mary and Stella in 2009, encourages people to eat a plant-based diet once a week. The idea is to help reduce

(Manjunath Kiran/AFP via Getty Images) All of India’s most widely practiced religions have dietary laws and traditions. For example, Hindu texts often praise vegetarianism, and Hindus may also avoid eating beef because cows are traditionally viewed as sacred. Muslim teachings, meanwhile, prohibit pork. The vast majority of Indian adults (81%) follow some restrictions on meat in their diet, including refraining from eating certain meats, not eating meat on certain days, or both. Lab-grown ‘meat’: Israelis enjoy the future with ‘food revolution’, Trending News

Diners in Israel’s central town of Ness Ziona are eating lab-grown “meat” that scientists claim is an environmentally friendly solution to feed the world’s rising population. A restaurant in Tel Aviv sells chicken grown in a lab. This restaurant is a type of SuperMeat testing ground that hosts regular test meals and generates customer feedback while awaiting regulatory approval. The aptly titled “The Chicken” serves burgers in an unusual setting: across the fine dining room, on the ground floor of a modest building in Ness Ziona, central Israel. The laboratory, where experts are busy behind big stainless steel vats, can

Vegetarians Have Healthier Biomarkers Than Meat Eaters

U.K. researchers have found that vegetarians have better indicators of health, called biomarkers, than people who eat meat. Vegetarians had overall lower levels of cholesterol, among other biomarkers. Experts say people don’t have to become vegetarian to be healthy. Instead, eating meat in moderation can lead to better health. People who follow a vegetarian diet have a healthier biomarker profile than meat eaters, found a new observational study of more than 177,000 British adults being presented at this week’s European Congress on Obesity (ECO). According to the researchers, this applied to people of any age and weight, and was

My Family’s Filipino Favorites Revolve Around Meat. Then I Started Cooking Vegetarian.

I grew up in a Filipino household where meat was always on the table. Some days, we’d have inihaw na liempo, or grilled marinated pork belly; other days, it was corned beef silog—sautéed canned corned beef with garlic fried rice and egg. Every family gathering had barbecue pork and offal in skewers; lumpia, or spring rolls filled with ground pork; pancit, thin rice noodles tossed with pork and mixed vegetables; even the occasional lechon—a whole-roasted pig. Whether it was traditional Filipino food or not, meat was always there. © Provided by Food52 When I first moved out of my parents’
